The Event

Technology is now an integral aspect of our daily lives, embedded in a broad range of products from our phones and tablets to our televisions and toasters to manufacturing equipment and automobiles. Designers who can deliver effective solutions, with an eye toward the future, are in increasingly high demand.

A conference for industry professionals, faculty, students and Detroit’s creative community, “Designing Interactive Experiences that Delight and Engage” brings together some of today’s most innovative minds in experience design to explore the future of human-technology interaction. A full day of presentations and real-time interactions, the CCS Summit will examine the possibilities for this rapidly expanding field focused on how people use, need and respond to technology.

This inaugural summit will give the CCS community and other design-forward creatives the opportunity to see what’s next in interaction design and preview the College’s new master’s program launching in fall 2014.

A World Usability Day Event in the “D” (Detroit)
(one of many events that will be held worldwide on this day)

Abstract

Usability is vitally important to many areas of the healthcare industry. The user population can broadly be divided into health care professionals, health care administrators, and consumers with no medical training. This talk will outline what is important for these various “user groups”, hone in on what is important for the growing group of “Consumer” users, and do a deep-dive on www.healthcare.gov, which has been in the media for much of this year,

Crescendo-ing…er …“Crash-scendo-ing”…in early October.

This talk will focus on the usability aspects of heathcare.gov. Attendees will walk away with not only a deep understanding of what did and did not work with the site as it rolled out in early October, but with recommendations relevant to anyone who is a stakeholder for a company or organization who needs their website and other customer touch points to be inviting and promote successful use for a very broad range of visitors.

About the Speaker

Dave Mitropoulos-Rundus has made his career designing products to fit people. He has designed physical, visual, and auditory user interfaces for hand-helds, kiosks, web sites, production machines, and automobiles, and has conducted user research in the lab, on the web, in the field, on the phone, in cars, and in the homes of consumers. Dave has held user experience consulting, sales, and management positions in both corporations and in consulting groups including OnStar by General Motors, Eastman Kodak, Compuware, and ForeSee. DaveMR Dave Mitropoulos-Rundus, will be speaking about Usability and User Experience:

The practice of usability or user experience (UX) was formalized 70 years ago. Over the decades, it has evolved and focused on many products, systems and applications. Rather than tracking history and evolution, this talk will quickly focus on the topics that have been most impacted and/or are most in need of impact by this practice we call user experience for this year and moving into the future. Attendees will walk away with an understanding of new and diverse areas where user experience work is needed, and ideas on how they may retool or redirect their own careers to work in a new industry or to remain in their current industry with a new focus. Dave will include as many of the following as time permits (and there may be a few more options not listed here):

  • Websites
  • Smart phones
  • Smart watches
  • Home healthcare products
  • In-vehicle driver assistance products and services

Parking and Venue information

We suggest parking at the Detroit Opera House parking garage, located on Broadway. Parking is $10, and it is a short walk up Broadway and around the corner from the Grand Circus space. Here is a link from the Grand Circus website on parking.

Grand Circus is located in the Broderick Tower, and you enter from the Woodward-facing doors.

Take the elevator to the 4th floor.

While this event is free, refreshments are not provided (but allowed). So feel free to bring your own drink/snacks.

Caitlin Potts In this talk, Caitlin Potts will share nuggets of information she has gleaned in over 1000 hours of meeting facilitation. These nuggets include how to recognize and prepare for various categories of meetings, why Edward Tufte is her facilitation hero, and how information architecture concepts will help you run a better meeting (and have better conversations).

Whether you’re a new usability professional, a jaded meeting attender, or just, well… human, you will be able to take away concepts from this talk that will help you have better conversations, and overall understanding of human communication (which is pretty important for effective meetings!).

Caitlin Potts is a user experience practitioner (designer and researcher) at Covenant Eyes, Inc., in Owosso. Working as part of an agile team, she spends her time collaborating with product owners, stakeholders, and developers to design web, mobile, and client application interfaces. She offers her services as a sounding board or sympathetic ear, on a daily basis, and is facilitating the creation of business rules for Covenant Eyes.
